Nothing’s ever enough. You eat one meal and an hour later you’re hungry again. What if they invented a food that took care of you for a whole week? A month, a year? Took away your hunger, your craving?
Every few months I get extremely anxious that something dark and nefarious is brewing within my body. Something too early in its development for doctors to detect or for me to symptomatically perceive. This anxiety is made worse by a healthy lack of faith in health professionals. Once adulthood set in hard and good post-Uni I was unable to view the doctors and therapists of the world as the salvation they purport to be.
I went to the doctor’s yesterday. “Just check me out doc. Check me out real nice.”
“What?”
“Just check me for anything. Haven’t checked my body out for ten years. Could be all sorts of weird problems in there. Not sure where to start.”
People stop going to the doctor after high school and there’s a dark undertone to it. Like after you’re young, they just don’t care about you anymore. Like once you’re past your prime, you can just let yourself go. No one cares. Every man for himself.
Do people do annual check ups? Is it a thing? Read Illichs medical nemesis?
